Quick Rothmann Update - A Tour of the JAARS Health Clinic - Winter 2015

Welcome to the JAARS Health Clinic!

Michelle is now working two mornings a week at the clinic. After one of the nurses retired there was a need for someone to oversee the desk that takes care of the charts, referrals and overseas medications. She still homeschools the boys and teaches one day a week at our homeschool co-op: Human Anatomy of course!

The clinic is open Mon., Wed. & Thurs. mornings from 8-12 and Tue. from 9-5. Most, if not all, of our clinic staff has served on the mission field around the world. The clinic, like all other areas at JAARS, has no paid employees. Some of the staff is supported through partners and churches and the rest are volunteers. Over 1500 patients were seen in the clinic last year between, lab visits, sick visits, annual physicals, specialized pilot physicals, immunizations, and various services.

Loren is getting his yearly physical labs done by Randy, one of our folks in the lab.

The JAARS clinic lab is a HUGE blessing to all JAARS members and volunteers.  Over 380 missionaries took advantage of the enormous cost savings of using the JAARS lab.  For example, we had our yearly physical blood work done at the clinic and it would have cost over $300 for us to have it done at our regular physician’s office. It only cost us $65 at the JAARS Clinic. With our high-deductible health plan this was so helpful. The lab also does blood work for things that missionaries need before going to the field like their blood type and immunization titers.

Sharon is our other wonderful lab person.

Bob Thomas, our PA, is so loved by the people at JAARS. He works most of the days the clinic is open (and a lot of the days it is not). Bob and his wife will be leaving at the end of February to serve in the South Pacific for 6-8 months. PLEASE pray for the Lord to send us the help we need while he is away.  The JAARS health clinic has many volunteer care providers. Once a month Dr. Sugg does our FAA Flight exams. An audiologist, a family practitioner, a dermatologist and a physical therapist all also volunteer their time at the clinic. The clinic saw over 850 people for physicals and various medical issues last year!

These are just some of our wonderful nurses.

Mary thanklessly takes care of OSHA (safety), HIPPA (privacy) and ordering all of our supplies in the clinic!

Did you know that in the past we have had a full pharmacy and a dentist working at the JAARS Clinic?

JAARS has been in mission aviation for over 60 years. We help our partners start and run flight programs—by training and sending staff, setting standards, equipping aircraft, doing on-the-ground research, and more. Currently, we help programs in Australia, Brazil, Cameroon, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, Peru, and Tanzania. Before becoming a pilot and then every-other year after a medical certificate is needed to fly solo in an airplane, helicopter, gyroplane, or airship. To obtain a medical certificate pilots must be examined by an FAA-designated Aviation Medical Examiner (AME). This is a thorough physical history and exam. The pilot’s vision and hearing, among other things, are also tested. Dr. Sugg andAlli work together to help JAARS pilots get this at a much reduced rate.

Did you know that church groups and individuals going on mission trips can come tothe JAARS Health Clinic for immunizations?

Peg is teaching missionaries who are headed overseas to do stitches using a chicken breast.  She also teaches them CPR & First Aid (not on the chicken breast - haha).

The clinic saw 328 people for immunizations last year.
We immunize for things like hepatitis B & C, yellow fever, typhoid, and normal childhood vaccines. We also give prophylactic medications for malaria. Last but not least, we do a great deal of education with patients as to how to live, how to eat and drink safely, and what to do should they come down with something while overseas.

Lorene giving Loren vaccines before his trip to the South Pacific. We have two other immunization nurses, Sam and Jan.

The clinic is a special place. We strive to serve the Lord with all of our strengths and gifts.  It takes many people to run a clinic. The Lord has blessed us with a wonderful staff but we are in great need of more volunteers.
Please spread the word and ask God to bring us doctors, nurses and other staff that we so desperately need.

We start every morning with devotion and prayer.

Peg (middle) is our director and Linda (right) is our office manager. They keep us all in line!

Since we started at JAARS, the clinic has saved us hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars.
We get physicals for $30-60 each. That is a huge savings from the over $500 each we have paid for physicals in the past. Matthew had an ingrown toenail recently and he had to have it surgically removed. It only cost us $60. I hate to think what that would have cost in a normal medical office.
Missionaries live on limited incomes and having medical help at such a reduced cost is an incredible blessing.

Serving Christ with you,
