Quick Rothmann Update - Fall 2013

Quick Rothmann Update
Fall 2013
Google and Email and Apps - OH MY! Loren Rothmann
Our department is excited and hard at work upgrading our productivity and collaboration tools to Google Apps for Business. This giant undertaking will unify several disconnected systems such as email, calendars, document sharing, instant messaging, and video conferencing. It will vastly improve how 5,000 missionaries in 90 countries work together in support of Bible translation. Please pray for us as we manage the project, communicate, develop and conduct training, move terabytes of email, and reconfigure thousands of devices around the world. There are so many interesting aspects to this project, feel free to contact me if you’re interested in learning more.

John 1:1 in the Vai language
Get the whole story July 4th, 2013 from Wycliffe UK
In some places, brand new Bible translations are being shared by mobile phone – the amount of room in a text message is just right for most Bible verses. But sharing just a Bible text message, or a Bible tweet or verse on a motivational poster, isn’t enough: we need the whole Bible, as Victor explains…
I have to type quietly. I am sitting in a large conference room at the Open University in London. Here at the extended table are over thirty academics interested in the use of digital media to communicate sacred texts and promote faith. Most are Christian – one is a main developer of the YouVersion Bible app, for example – but others represent different religions. I am here as part of our work to see Scripture for minority language groups distributed as widely as possible.
A recurring theme of the presentations has been how digital media is fragmenting the text. Small mobile phone screens and verse-by-verse web sites and 160-character ‘tweets’ tend to reinforce the tendency to read Scripture a bite at a time, with little regard for context or the larger story. The deep character of God can get lost when reduced to small, carefully selected verses – even if those are key highlights.
The Story of God is just that – a story. It is an epic romance of God’s love for his people. This is why Bible translation is often a lifetime commitment. It’s not enough to have some key passages. You need the whole story.
Victor is a specialist in fonts and scripts, and his work enables people to have the Bible not just in a language but in a form that makes sense and speaks clearest. Pray for this work and others in the September/October Call to Prayer.
Prayer Requests and Praise Reports
·         We had a very nice visit with Loren’s sister and her family from Germany.
  • Michelle’s car is having major issues that the mechanic is still diagnosing.
  • Matthew is registered for driving school (praise and prayer!)
  • Both boys have earned their Star rank in Scouts. Zack has almost earned Life. Both want to get Eagle.
  • Ninth grade homeschool will be very demanding. Pray we honor the Lord with what He gives us.
  • Pray for First Baptist Matthews as they search for a senior and youth pastor.
  • Pray for Fellowship Church as they seek a bigger meeting place to accommodate growth.
Serving Christ with you,
Loren, Michelle, Matthew & Zack
