One day, a man walking down the beach saw a young man in the distance picking up small objects, and throwing them into the ocean. “May I ask what it is that you are doing?" The young man paused, looked up, and replied "Throwing starfish into the ocean." “Why?” he asked. The young man replied, "The sun is up and the tide is going out. If I don't throw them in, they'll die." Upon hearing this, the man commented, "But, young man, do you not realize that there are miles and miles of beach and there are starfish all along every mile? You can't possibly make a difference!" At this, the young man bent down, picked up yet another starfish, and threw it into the ocean. As it met the water, he said, "It made a difference to that one."
The task of saving the starfish was overwhelming and it seemed that one person hardly made a difference. Wycliffe’s task of translating the Bible and reaching the world for God is also too large for one person. He designed it that way so that no one could boast and the glory would be given to Him. In our weakness He is strong (2 Cor. 12:9). Each of us are called to use the gifts He has given us to lead people to a saving knowledge of Jesus. Sometimes we ask, “What difference can I possibly make?” The answer is; none apart from Him. He is doing mighty things and uses us to accomplish them—what a blessing! We want to serve God full-time in IT and health care and are confident that God is preparing the hearts of people to come alongside us in prayer and monthly financial partnership.
